American Flat Track (formerly AMA Pro) motorcycle racing returns to TEXAS.
Texas Motor Speedway will play host to the American Flat Track national series on September 23rd, 2017. The dirt track is multi-million dollar facility with top-level lighting, seating, and amenities. AFT racers will run around the 1/2 mile clay oval at speeds exceeding 100 MPH! The LS NATS event will be round 17 of a 18 round series. The series begins in March at the Harley Davidson TT National at Daytona Speedway, and ends the season at the Perris California Short Track National.
Changes changes changes.
The AFT series underwent many changes over the off season and the name change is just the beginning. Formerly AFT had two classes known as GNC 1 and GNC 2. They are now the Twins and Singles classes respectively. The Twins class is the premier division and the machines are twin cylinder purpose built high end race machines with displacements around 750cc. The Singles class is a highly competitive “feeder” class and is limited to 450cc production based race bikes. This change brings lots of excitement as it opens the door for all of the major brands of motorcycle manufacturers to invest into the sport with a clear picture of their market presence.
Within the Twins class many BIG changes have transpired and we all are anxious to watch the series battle unfold. At the end of the 2016 season Indian Motorcycle introduced their all new purpose built FTR 750 race bike and the “Indian Wrecking Crew” factory team was named. It does not disappoint. Indian hired arguably three of the top five riders on the circuit. Three time National Champion Jared Mees, 2016 National Champion Bryan Smith, and former factory rider Brad “The Bullet” Baker were named as the all new Indian Wrecking Crew. Harley Davidson has now answered the call by putting together an amazing three member factory team and announced that the team will be riding the all new water cooled XGR 750. Kenny “King of Cool” Coolbeth, Jake Johnson, and Brandon Robinson will all three pilot the new water cooled machines while chasing the 2017 Championship. Other notable riders and equipment to watch for include “Slammin” Sammy Halbert riding the all new Yamaha DT07 factory racer and a whole host of top level riders looking to take down the big factory teams in this transitional period. You’ll see entrants on really trick machines of all brands including KTM, Ducati, Triumph, Kawasaki and more.
Its more than a race, its an event!
The Inaugural Lone Star National Half Mile National is more than just a race, its going to be an event. “We are excited to bring AFT racing back to the State of Texas and we are really looking forward to putting together a huge party leading up to the race action!” says promoter Shawn Brassfield. “We intend to make the event a ride in destination for motorcyclists from all over Texas and surrounding States! We will have a large presence of motorcycle industry professionals on hand showing their products in the vendor area as well as great entertainment and live music. This will be an all around fun event you won’t want to miss.” To cap off the fun filled day, you’ll see some crazy side by side race action under the lights of the Dirt Track at TMS.
